Local diner. I like breakfast so it works for me.

I have no idea why people don't give this place 5 stars. The service is WONDERFUL, it is family owned and very warm feel. The food is plentiful and SO tasty. I love love love their pancakes and skillets. The owner is super sweet. It is a gem in Oak Park. I love this place. I have lived in Chicago for 6 yrs and have yet to find a breakfast place that compares. Great for kids, and families!

Have been to George's many times. In some ways, it's a very typical diner, but I love that they often remember us, and we always feel at home. You probably wouldn't categorize much of the menu as "healthy," and the decor is fairly average. But I don't care. I really appreciate the HUGE menu and wide variety of options. The staff is fast but occasionally curt. Nevertheless you get good service, and they are accommodating when you ask for substitutions. We will always come back. George's would have to do something pretty bad to be taken out of our family's restaurant rotation.

I refuse to give 1 star to any place that is at least acceptable. Let me just say that I made a mistake taking my out of town family to this place to make them happy. The service was quick and accurate, but given the fact that the place was nearly empty was not surprising. The food itself is another matter. I had a hamburger (or should I say frozen patty of something other than beef), my mom had a terrible Monte Cristo, and I cannot remember what my father got. Needless to say that the food was forgettable as well as the experience.

George's may be named after George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life." It looks and feels like a restaurant he would have enjoyed. Simple, straightforward, hearty Greek style kitchen, family owners, good service. Just plain nice in every way. And very reasonably priced.

OK, this is not a fine dining establishment... so lets not compare crab apples to passion fruit. When we want breakfast that is fast, damn good and great service we come here. George is always ready with a menu's seat, or a quarter if you need to feed the meter. The servers and buss boys are very good... my coffee cup is always full and the food comes in minutes. ( and they have turkey sausage!) The menu is extensive, we ate dinner once and it was good I had a chicken pita... it is a Greek diner... so if you order pasta shame on you.

George's is our hometown breakfast stand-by. Very kid-friendly and the owners are always at the front door to greet and seat you. Has an old-style diner counter with the stools and booths for the families. Kids love the Mickey Mouse pancakes and we love the skillets and french toast. Not really a gourmet breakfast spot, but good ol' home cooking. Parking can be difficult on the street during a busy weekend. Hardly ever wait to get a seat which is why we like to go here, nothing is worse than waiting with two little kids.

great place for breakfast. the staff are always very friendly and accommodating. we like the breakfast burrito options, but the crepes are good for something sweeter. we've been to george's quite a few times now and haven't been disappointed once. awesome local joint.

We're new to Oak Park and were pretty satisfied with George's. It hit the spot with us for a lazy Saturday with our very rambunctious three year old. First thing you should know about this place is that it is not a high-class establishment, but as the title indicates, a "family restaurant." In that sense, it lives up to what it purports to be, so previous reviews that preface comments with notes about picky eating should be considered, but think about the greater context. They have a ton of menu items, so surely you'll be able to find something you like. We liked the expansiveness of the breakfast menu and were glad to support a locally-owned establishment over a place like Denny's and the sort (and furthermore, the food is better than Denny's in my opinion...plus, you can't get a Zorba the Greek Skillet with a short stack of pancakes at Denny's.) Food is fine, service is decent, and it's good for kids. If you want something quick and casual, you really can't go wrong here.

BEST omelettes! George's is always my go-to spot when in the mood for a hearty breakfast in a comfy booth. Great service and love the old-school diner vibe.

  • Girish V.

Love this place. All three of us in our family consider this a gold standard for breakfast items. Even on a vacation we search out for a place like George's for breakfast. Love their Eggs Florentine with that tangy Hollandaise sauce. The only minus is it is crowded most of the times we go and the waiters look pretty stressed out looking at their faces.

Food is ok and basic. Typical Greek restaurant. Not the best staff.

I will say that the "George's Crumbler" sandwich is a very good diner-lunch sandwich. After several different meals from George's, I realized my money is better-spent elsewhere on Oak Park Avenue. For instance, want a good Greek Salad? Go up the block to Papa Spiro's, where you will pay about the same price, give or take a couple bucks, but the greens will be fresh, the dressing will be a vinaigrette (rather than mostly oil), and the chicken you add will be juicy and flavorful. Want a different salad?--Go up the street again to Winberie's, where all their salads are fabulous, and, on average, about $3 more than a salad from George's, but well worth it. The breakfast items I have had have been OK, but nothing special--omelettes, ham and eggs, reasonably priced, but nothing to repeat.

  • Rasmus N.

I hate to knock on a family owned and operated business since I feel this world needs more of them, but George's offers nothing special. It's on the greasy side and the food is mediocre (could proably prepare a tastier breakfast at home).

    (2)
  • Kira B.

I grew up very close to George's and ate there several times, more for convenience than anything else. There are no exceptional menu items, the food is fairly bland, and the wait staff is brusque and unwelcoming.

  • Emily R.

great diner food and great for kids! ask for the mickey mouse pancakes for the kids...they will definitely be a hit! Only negative...was ordered breakfast in the evening one time and definitely got the left over nuked bacon from the morning.

  • Bridgette K.

The menu is big and the food is great. This is a great breakfast and lunch spot. The service is quick and friendly which is a plus when your on the run and need breakfast. The blt sammich is great and so is their feta cheese omlete. The waffles and crepes are yummy to. Their getting cheap though on the juice and milk which is very disappointing but it is every where. Will be making a visit sooon.

Meh. I've been going to George's for years and I'm always bummed out about it. Some of my friends LOVE it and I can never understand why. Its just your average family restaurant. I don't think I've ever had a coffee cup there that didn't have crud on the outside of it. (Clean the dishwasher, please!) I had a typical eggs, potatoes and bacon breakfast. $9.00 for the worst quality bacon ever. The eggs, potatoes and toast were fine. The only saving grace of this restaurant are the waitresses. They've been there forever and are so nice. Too bad its over-priced with dirty dishes.

  • Maura J.

I love diners, and George's is one of the best examples. I've ordered everything from just a cup of soup to a full dinner plus dessert, and the quality has always been very good, well above average. Great sandwiches - they use carved slices of chicken, turkey, and ham. Service is efficient and attentive. I gave five full starts because of the consistency in quality across the menu. Most diners I'm afraid to order anything other than the usual standards (breakfast or burger), but here, I've ordered from just about every part of the menu and been pleasantly surprised. Also - they will substitute fruit or a baked potato for fries - gotta love the healthy options!

  • Meghan L.

best breakfast in oak park by a landslide. you go here for breakfast, ok? forget about everything else beyond the occasional sandwich or a bowl of their split pea soup, which is excellent.

  • Yuly M.

So went here the other day with a friend for lunch cause maya del sol was closed at 2 for an hour. weird but thats a dif. story. Pretty nice place. woulda never pictured it from the outside but pretty spacey place and the waitress was really nice. It's your normal diner with a pretty big menu. Of course i kept it simple with a club sandwich and fries. The breakfast looked pretty good too though. Portion was pretty big and price was good. Good lunch spot if your in the area.

  • Cali K.

It's a diner and it is delicious! My husband and I stopped in to George's for sunday brunch and left very happy. Nothing fancy (pancakes/eggs/omlettes), but the food was excellent and the service was fast and friendly. I think we might become regulars.

    (4)
  • nic d.

The only negative thing I can say is the menu is so huge I had a hard time deciding what to order. The 4 of us ordered completely different types of food and everyone was extremely happy. Huge portions priced so low. I couldn't finish my salad it was so big. Next time I'm in IL, I'm def hitting up Goerge's again-YUM!!!

  • David H.

i came here almost weekly growing up and have gone while visiting since then. that being said, to everyone that complains about the OJ, it's been that size since at least 1985, that's about as far back as i can remember, probably still have the same waitresses. standard breakfast, tasty, greasy and easy.

George's family restaurant is what the name implies. It is an awesome place to bring your family. The food is everything you'd expect from a breakfast joint but also nothing more. You have your basic varieties of pancakes, waffles, crepes, and omelettes among other choices. The service is decent but there is limited space and the dining area is a bit crowed. Plus, it WILL be packed every single Sunday as it is a very family friendly environment and across the street from a Catholic Church. Other than that, my experience here was nothing short from a good time.

    (4)
  • Jill B.

This is your classic family diner with a decent variety of breakfast and lunch options. The coffee is non-stop, the owner is always wandering around to check on patrons, and you will feel full by the time you leave. It can get a bit noisy when it's crowded, so it's not a place to go to have a group discussion, but if you're looking for some very reasonably priced diner food, this is the place to go.

    (4)
  • Daniel H.

A great spot & the coffee keeps a flowing. The name says it all. It's a good family spot. The only thing is that the actual service was a bit slow. They weren't that busy either. Maybe it was because I wasn't s "home-Towner" to the place. I saw they knew a lot of people coming in. Ill give them another try. Everyone has an "off day" at times. But the food & coffee was good bad the hobo skillet. Excellent!

    (4)
  • Jennifer H.

I think the best way to describe this diner is to think of the diner from Seinfeld. It has the homey, casual feel to it. It features a large menu of both breakfast and lunch items to please anyone. The omelet was kinda fried/burnt on the outside which I found really delicious. The potatoes were tasty as well. We had problem getting our check in a timely manner which dampened the experience, especially being mainly a breakfast place where it's important to to be mindful of customers' time.

  • Scott S.

A native New Yorker, I moved to Oak Park, IL in February 2015 and George's Restaurant was my first stop. I've been coming weekly ever since. I'm a huge breakfast guy and the skillets are amazing!!! Also the staff is always accommodating and friendly! Definitely my go to place!

  • Eric S.

Not a great first impression of this place, to be honest. But don't worry George, I'll give you another chance someday soon. This is one of those places with the million-plus-page plasticized menus, where you can order breakfast at dinner and dinner at whatever ungodly hour you feel like. A cute, kinda quaint diner with way too much crap on the tables. Coffee creamer, saltine crackers, mini margarine tubs, whipped butter pails, a jam/jelly/marmalade organizer, ketchup, hot sauce, a dozen different kinds of sugar packets......the condiments probably took up 1/3 of the table. Pretty damn cluttered. I thought they'd make a mean good patty melt, but I was mistaken. The burger meat was pretty sketch, and not particularly cheap. Next time I come here, I'll be sure to try their breakfast items, which are hopefully way better.

Best Pancakes- HANDS DOWN! Great family business that really care about their customers and employees. If you have never been- you are missing out!

  • Rachel D.

George's is your classic tasty diner. Solid food, fast service, good prices. If you want a short stack of pancakes with a side of bacon, this is your place. I highly recommend the American skillet, which comes with the corn beef hash. Really, anything with the corn beef hash is great. The skillets come with a side of pancakes, french toast, or toast. Usually my husband and I get one to split, and we come away stuffed. We take our kid, and they are great with him, super accommodating. Easy parking. Yum.

Awesome spot. Perfect for families. Such a large menu, everyone will find something to eat! And trust me it will be darn good!

  • Mary J. C.

I'm in love with the hobo skillet.... it is seriously the best and I'm hooked. Based on the reviews I usually avoid going on the weekends and I always take my food to go. The ladies that answer the phone aren't the friendliest but they haven't messed up my order so I give them a pass.

    (4)
  • John T.

Simple diner with the usual selection. Nothing out of the ordinary, really, but they don't seem to mess anything up, so that's always solid. This is the kind of place where you can walk in, order, and get what you are expecting without any real surprises. In today's world, everyone seems to be doing a fusion dish or some sort of unique twist on a classic dish. When I get french toast, I want French toast, not bread with a million exotic things on it and an odd type of syrup. Thanks to this place for keeping it original.

George's has the best breakfast! I have been coming to this family owned restaurant for years for their breakfast and i am never disappointed! They have large selection to choose from! Great service! They are always accommodating! I love this place!

If you have lived more than a week anywhere in Chicagoland, you already know George's. It is indistinguishable from the 1000 other Greek-owned, breakfast-oriented family restaurants. We go there frequently because it is 200 feet from our house, and we enjoy it every time. But we also enter knowing what we're about to get: nice but not overly solicitous service, quality but unexceptional breakfast fare, and a semi-surly (but in a good way) George manning the cash register.

  • Peter S.

I have eaten here for the last time today. My wife and I stopped eating here six months ago but decided to give it one more chance for breakfast today. It was a waste of money and time. The eggs were neither cooked to order or tasty but rather runny and watery on the plate. The pancakes were so undercooked, I had to send them back because I am not inclined to eat half cooked pancake batter. The waitress was overwhelmed by the Sunday morning crowd and the place was noisy and not exceptionally clean. This place may have been a better establishment in the past but it is no longer a place that satisfies, in terms of quality or value. I cannot express how disappointed I am to see this old-school diner take such a horrible nose dive because it will certainly be replaced by some unneeded corporate restaurant along this busy Oak Park Street. In conclusion, I find it unbelievable that nearly all the reviews, for this restaurant are either four or five stars. It really seems odd to me that I am the only person who has consistently had mediocre food at this place during the last year. George the Elder stands at the cash register, squeezing his nickels; the smug old Greek, without a smile, ignoring his patrons greetings as if, this ancient artifact is somehow better than the rest of humanity. Really guys?! The food, sanitary conditions, service and paint on the walls all need some retooling. I love good diner food and this is no longer it.

I love this breakfast restaurant. Food is good. customer service is really nice. This place feels very home like and food is great. They have a huge selection and it's not pricy.

  • Kara A.

Some of the best food I've had in Oak Park! I just went here for lunch yesterday and got the chicken Caesar wrap with chicken noodle soup and fresh fruit. The soup was delicious and came out before the meal which was really great. The wrap was one of the best chicken Caesar wraps I've ever had. There was tons of freshly made, hot grilled chicken and it wasn't drowning in dressing. It came with a really good spinach tortilla. The fruit was ripe, fresh, and delicious. The service was incredibly fast. I was in and out within fifteen minutes. The table busser was on top of his sh**. I longest I sat with empty bowls or plates at my table was about 30 seconds, and my water was constantly full! Delicious food and great service for a great price!

  • Rui C.

Huge selection on the menu for breakfast, lunch & dinner, cute decor, beyond reasonable prices and fantastic service. -1 for having a sparse "egg-free" breakfast menu option.

    (4)
  • Mister M.

You simply cannot go wrong with George's. Great for breakfast or lunch. Dinner? not too sure. Old school jack of all trades restaurant that succeeds on more levels than it fails. Everything is fresh and portions are huge. Very good value. Daily specials, house made soups, super fresh salads etc. The folks that own and work here are as friendly as can be. Anyone who knows how to navigate a "Greek diner" menu will love George's. Contrary to a prior idiotic post, you can expect a very clean and tidy environment with very friendly service.

    (5)
  • Kate Z.

George's is solid diner food. I ordered the hobo skillet and had to restrain myself from devouring the entire thing (it is huge). Not the friendliest service ever but certainly not rude either. Recommended for those weekend brunches when you want something greasy and delicious and/or don't want to join the hordes at Denny's or IHOP.

    (4)
  • Matt M.

I was not really "wowed" with this place. I was not offended by this place. It is not a nostalgic step into yesteryear for old-timers nor is it a new style diner. It is there without the biggest or most impressive footprint in a really great piece of real estate. The menu is large and contains a million ways to accompany your eggs or pancakes. But the waffles and toast are nothing impressive and taste thawed. I dont know if this is the case, but the what is offered just feels forced. With so much competition in the Oak Park area I can not say I'll be running back or away anytime soon.

    (3)
  • Valerie K.

We went here for the first time this morning, and it was great! The food as well as the service were fantastic. My husband and I each ordered burritos. I ordered the Greek and he ordered one with chorizo. We'd both order them again. The service was fantastic. John (who I think is one of the owners?) struck up a conversation with us about our 3-month old. He was extremely nice, and even gave me some information about a local mom's group. I highly recommend this place, and we will definitely be returning.

  • Shyam S.

Sorry to have to reduce my rating by a star, but I just wasn't impressed with the food anymore. Maybe my own taste buds have become more finally tuned, or there are just better options nearby, but George's seemed to me a Greek diner with a menu that has not changed with the times. I had a pathetic, chicken Caesar salad that was made with no effort or thought and could easily have been replicated and perfected at home. The same with the lame, uninspiring clam chowder soup that was heavy with cornstarch and low on originality. While my dad really liked his turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce - he's an old guy so Picadilly is fine dining for him - I would have to say that I am overall disappointed with my experience.

  • Aliyeh L.

In my opinion, you're getting what you pay for. There is nothing pricey about this place it is your average all around diner and the breakfast of course is great considering it comes with the territory. I come in here all the time with my husband and my son. The main waitress is extremely genuine and is always nice to us. Service is friendly and for the most part always fast. If you're looking for a family oriented homey restaurant you will have found it in George's

Rice pudding is the best and the portions at dinner are great. I would come every week but I don't think I could fit in the booths after 200 pounds just from the rice pudding and the best liver and mac n cheese plus all those yummy Greek dishes... Love this place See you tonight !

  • Kevin H.

We been going to George's for years for our weekend breakfast. Classic diner with a robust menu at reasonable prices. Love the family style feel and terrific staff and service. Great place for kids. My only complaint is that everyone else knows about how good George's is so from time to time it is quite busy. Don't forget to try the short stack of pancakes, outstanding.

    (4)
  • Steven C.

Just a real down to earth local diner. It's clean, the food is very good, the service is excellent. ..always in and out at my desired pace. Parking isn't too bad and the hours are good. ..me and the kids love it here and plan to be regulars for a long time.

Terrible! Went for breakfast on a Sunday. Pricey, service was bad, & food was not that good! Paid over $9 for one of the breakfast specials. $43 total for breakfast, not including tip, for me, my wife, and (2) small children. I don't mind paying the $43, but at least give me good food & service! Server was not attentive, forgot our waters, then forgot the kids milk, didn't offer my wife a refill on her coffee. Need I say more. :( Food lacked flavor, my French toast was very dry, & had a funny after-taste. In addition, no presentation on the food what so ever, no garnish, piece of melon, slice of orange, nada. The worst part about this experience is when I went to pay the check! I mentioned to the owner that the service was not that good, and the owner did not respond. I then proceeded to also tell him that the food was not that good either, and all he responded was, "it's usually good". He didn't probe and ask questions to why I felt this way?. Nor did he apologize. Newsflash! When you go to eat at a restaurant, you expect some basic degree of customer service, at the very least. Sorry George's, but I will never go here again!

Classic greasy spoon style diner. Good food, good prices, good people. Simple place, simple review.

    (4)
  • Stephanie R.

George's is everything I want in a breakfast joint. Fast service- No joke, you order and the food comes out ten minutes later. Perfect portions- The one egg with hashbrowns and toast is just enough for me. I don't like starting my day with a food coma. Attentive servers- my coffee never goes empty and they bring my boyfriend two iced teas at a time since he drinks it so quickly.

    (5)
  • Sharon S.

Always go here for breakfast when I'm in town, frendly staff, good food, and good price.

  • Thomas G.

I like this place for breakfast. They have great eggs, hash browns, and skillets. It's also okay for lunch- in the great tradition of Greek Diners, they have a nice olive burger. The gyros, well they (seem to) have these shingle like little slabs of meat they throw on the grill from the way it tastes instead of meat on a spit like most other restaurants that serve gyros. I think you'd go elsewhere if you really want gyros, but that being said I really think you can't go wrong with their breakfast or brunch selections. Were it not for the way they serve gyros, I'd give it four stars. Not health food by any means, but you will feel full when you leave. It can be a loud place, but hey- it's a popular restaurant. I go back when I'm in the mood for nice Greek diner food.

    (3)
  • Annette Q.

This is a family diner. It says so in the name of the restaurant so if you like a gajillion screaming children, this is definitely the place for you! Waffle was adequate, orange juice good. Sunday morning is quite popular & it's a full house. With that, you'd think extra staff would be on hand. Please know that I don't want to take any money out of any wait staff's pockets, but they hustle & patrons are still waiting. Ok I'll stop here. Nice people, ok place. I guess I'd go back.

    (3)
  • Grace N.

George's is a solid, Greek diner where the server will usher you, menu in hand, to "anywhere you want to sit," the skillet section of the menu practically takes up the entire page (great for the hubby's tummy, horrible for his arteries), and you can get french toast as a side with your meal, instead of the typical pancakes. This is a major plus, as french toast is far superior to pancakes, in my opinion. The omelet selection is nice as well. The Gardener's Omelet will give you false sense of healthiness as you tuck into your greasy, and satisfying hash browns. No wait on a Saturday? Not bad.

  • Sean C.

This place has become a Saturday morning favorite of my family since we moved to Oak Park. Each visit, no matter how crowded, we are seated quickly, we have multiple people stopping by to make sure we are taken care of and making us feel welcome--especially our kids! The food is hearty, flavorful diner food. We've always gone for breakfast/brunch so the pancakes, french toast, waffles, skillets (my favorite is the "hobo skillet") and sides exceed expectations. Just the right amount of grease and salt to know that you are enjoying a special treat. A unique bonus is the free parking out back.

An old school Greek diner with friendly people and great prices... The Kalamata omelette is hands down the best omelette I've ever had!

  • Jess C.

When you're looking for a good family style restaurant, this is the place to go! With an array of menu items to choose from for any 3 different meals of the day, you will have to make several trips to try everything out. I got their chicken kabobs on rice and it was a meal for a KING! Remember to get a box.

I was well pleased. Prices are reasonable. Prompt and courteous service. Food was decent. But most of all a very pleasant atmosphere!!

If you are looking for more than your run-of-the-mill pancake houses, George's will satisfy. I took my parents, my husband, and my son here for a change from IHOP. Let me face it: my parents and husband have never elevated their fine dining experience beyond IHOP. Therefore, George's met their expectations. From a nutritional standpoint, the portions are huge and caloric-laden. Consider sharing a plate, or do as my husband and I did and order a sandwich and breakfast plate, then combine them. Mr. George is a nice dude. He always makes my son smile.

  • Angela C.

I came here for lunch with a friend one day and had a great experience! They have great sandwiches, great customer service and a great family-style atmosphere. The bread was good too, although not as fresh as I'd like. I definitely want to come back for breakfast at some point since I hear it's supposed to be awesome! I also appreciated their willingness to work with my dairy allergy on my sandwich. Always a plus!

  • Grace L.

Great breakfast spot! The portions were VERY generous. I had the Greek Skillet and it was fantastic. French toast not so good, but the side pancakes were awesome. Comfy booth seating, nice pictures on the wall, friendly waitstaff--the perfect place for a snowy New Year's Day morning.

  • Shannon O.

Neighborhood charm where everybody knows your name. Phenomenal staff, excellent price, quality and selection. If you like a neighborhood gem where the staff smile, crack jokes, and call you by your name, this is the place. While at breakfast on a snowy Saturday morning, we watched one of the staff help an elderly couple to their car in the snow, and yielded traffic for the elderly couple to pull away safely from their parking space. This speaks immensely of George's staff, their friendly neighborhood charm, and genuine down to earth good people.

I did go during Sunday brunch hours, so it was crowded and there were plenty of families. Though happily, no screaming or unruly children among them. Our wait was very short, maybe 5 minutes, and the service and the food were both delivered smoothly and quickly. The food itself was okay. I ordered the VIP Breakfast with my eggs over-medium, and that's what I got. This might not seem like a big deal, but often places mess this up. The Belgian waffle was tasty, and the ham slab was plentiful, but seemed like it had been water enhanced and was very salty. Not one of the better hams that I've had, but no where near the worst either. My spouse ordered the eggs and deviled ham. She enjoyed it, but there was nothing great about it either. The price is fair. Here's the thing, the place was okay. Not terrible, not great, not someplace I'll go back to of my own breakfast excitement, but I would go if someone suggested it. It's a basic Greek style family restaurant. It met all the expectations that I had for it.

Good diner-style breakfast food and lunches with some Greek flair. I especially enjoy their skillets, which have the option of toast, pancakes, or French Toast. The only hot sauce they offer is Louisiana Hot Sauce though - I would prefer some Cholula but it's not a big deal. They also have flavored creamers along with real half and half as an option for your coffee, if you drink coffee. Their prices are slightly higher than Denny's but not much. Nice homey atmosphere - the working antique cash register is a nice touch (but they do take credit cards.) When I'm in the mood for a big breakfast, this is one of my top options. Haven't had much of their lunch food but my dining partners have complimented it.

i would go to this place before I went to a large chain place for breakfast, but I would not go here if i had a choice. Going to George's is sort of like going to to the prom with a the date you really did not want to end up with; being there, but knowing you would have had a better time with someone else. The food is sub par, and not very fresh, and has the originality of Celine Dion's greatest hits (except without all the cool Canadian things). It is drab, LOUD, and is nowhere cool enough to play the "we only accept cash" game. Service is middle of the road, and they often forget your drinks. When I first moved to the area years ago, I took my parents there, and we all left feeling like we just wasted our time, and money. I have been back twice since, and always left feeling the same way, like someone stole my wallet, but gave it back with some of the money missing, and that devious smile saying "at least I did not take it all". If you're hungry, and you need to eat, and you want to keep it local, try other establishments first. After that, after all other avenues are exhausted, then, and only then, go here.

The most friendly place in Oak Park. Either George or his sons will know you are there, and remember you! This is my daughters' favorite restaurant in Oak Park!

My friends go to church across the street from here, so we usually meet them for "breakfast" after. It is breakfast, but it is also the only meal I need for the day. It is hard not to order a skillet every time. There are choices, but they all satisfy every breakfast checkbox that usually makes ordering breakfast so difficult. Eggs? How do you want 'em? Hashbrowns? A cozy nest for the rest of the skillet. Toppings? How many? Pancakes or french toast or chocolate chip pancakes? The skillets are so satisfying one need not be tempted by the choices of other things, of which there are many. MANY. They keep the coffee coming and somehow manage to fit everything on the table. The staff is friendly and I always feel welcome.

I've been here a few times before and each time I have left full and happy. The service is quick (I went before work so I had a set amount of "me " time today). I love the early bird specials! Prices are pretty low and the quality is better than you would get at your local Denny's or IHOP. The pancakes are huge! and cake-like. Trust me..don't get these before work because they will make you sleepy (kind of heavy). This place also has turkey sausage which is a huge plus in my book. One downside and I think they are doing this everywhere...the small juice is seriously the size of a shot glass. The water cup is larger and I find this odd. Go for the food but go to the grocery store for your juice fix.

George's is a typical greek diner. The soups are pretty good as is the New Orleans French toast. The omelets are dry and awful and the scrambles aren't anything to write home about. I suspect they don't use real eggs. Also last time I went the service was HORRIBLE. My boyfriend politely asked our waitress for a pitcher of water because he was very dehydrated and she looked at him as though she just slapped him in the face and said "we don't doooo that" and angrily returned with 3 glasses of water and slammed them on the table. She didn't say a word to us after that and kept glaring at us. Won't be returning if that crab apple is there.

I can't tell you how long I've been going to George's. Probably since it's been open. It's a classic Greco-American Style Chicago Diner and Pancake House. The pancakes are fabulous, the service is prompt, and I have a few favorites: The Washington Omelet... cheddar cheese, apples, eggs... it's really good. The Gardener's Omelet... the avocado slices are really fabulous. Banana Pancakes. Their banana pancakes are just better. Skillets. Eat once... full all day.... I love their pancakes. Nice and fluffy. And whenever I'm in the mood for a real diner classic... I get their Hot Roasted Turkey sandwich. Mmmm. But the reason we love George's? The men. Yep... from George on down to the busboy... the men at George's are multi-generational eye candy. ;-) Seriously... the only place where they could improve is their dessert case. It's your standard food service cake and pie. The service is "diner" service. You're not going to get petted... but you will get your table quickly... your food promptly... and whatever else you want for a reasonable price without much hassle.

This is a staple to Oak Park. If you live in Oak Park, you must go here for early Saturday/Sunday brunch. The staff is friendly, the ambiance is fresh with all your favorite faces from Oak Park. The food is ok - doesn't deviate much from what you find at any 50's place. Parking is, and will be, an issue. Do yourself a favor and walk. I did like the old 1940's cash machine. :)

This is my "go to" place for breakfast in Oak Park. The food is fresh and service is pretty quick. No complaints here. Plenty of street parking (pay parking) unless you go on Sunday mornings which is when we go. Sundays the wait is annoying but my mom loves going here and whatever makes her happy makes me happy.

I love restaurants like these. Everyone can find something to eat. I love the Greek foods. They can be made gluten, dairy and soy free. My friends love the soups here. I love George, great staff, reasonable prices, consistent quality, and always very clean! I grew up in the area and have always loved this place. It is wheelchair accessible.

I went here for breakfast this morning and in hindsight I should have tried something more exciting - I was so tempted to the apple and cheddar omelette but I didn't and now I'm kicking myself! I just had a boiled egg with rye toast, potatoes and canadian bacon. It was all good - especially the potatoes but I feel like I have nothing to really critique. The service was good and the place was packed out. Maybe I missed out on a miracle. :)

Okay, let me begin by saying I go to George's almost every weekend for the last few months, Sunday morning. It is what you want in a big, comfort- foody breakfast good quality diner food, served quickly, at a good price. We leave feeling full of the kind of classic American (with the occasional Greek twist) food that just cannot be replaced by the lighter, trendier fare I usually love. Let me also say, this is a visit specific rating, not an overall assessment. I had what was literally some of the worst service ever today. We went in during the slow hours because we had to get in and out, as the place is empty. We are promptly seated by the owner, and after a few minutes, our server comes by to take our order. As we are ordering, she stops in the middle to greet a regular. Fine, as much as I would prefer your attention, and expect you just to shoot a quick smile and wave. I after all, care very little about the fact John was on vacation, and just want my coffee. We order, she asks if we want coffee, and charges off, returns with the coffee and is gone to greet John's table in the next room. And greet them. And some more. Meanwhile, I would like more coffee, but hey, my food should be out soon, so I will get some then, right? And by the way, where is my food? Then, as my dining companion points out (a chef, and nothing bothers someone will a Culinary degree more than this), the food has been dying in the window for quite some time. Finally, the server leaves the table of her regular and his wife, to put in their order, which is luckily located by our food. She leaves his eggs to continue getting rubbery and overcooked under the lamp, and my pancakes to keep getting tough, as she enters in their order. Only then, she deems it worth of her time to bring us our food. She slops it on the table, never asking if there was anything else we needed, and dashes away before we can bother her with any of our insipid requests, like caffeine. I ask if there is a possibility she is returning with coffee, after all, as a former server myself, I have underestimated the speed of gulper, and always apologized, and promised to return immediately with that sweet elixir of life. My friend says he is sure she is, but then, I notice her, surprise, surprise, over at the other table, having them scroll through the pictures on her phone. YOU SHOULD NEVER HAVE YOUR PHONE ON YOU IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY, it means you are more interested in your social life than your customers! So after I caught a few flies, watching her blatantly ignore us, and flip through her phone, I flag down another server to get us coffee. At this point, most of our meals are gone, and she finally returns to our table, and two unhappy customers. She asks if everything is alright, without pausing as she breezes by. I respond with a not to subtle "mmmhmmm". Normally, a server would take this as a customer being dissatisfied, actually stop and investigate. Not a chance with our Miss Congeniality, she just disappers again, to wait for the other tables food by the pass thru. So we finish. And we wait. And wait. Finally the owner sees our empty plates pushed to the side, and come to gather them up, "do we need anything?" "More coffee?" When we ask for the check, he goes to find our server. She returns with the check in a few minutes, literally slams it down on the table, and snaps "Here!" complete with snotty head bob, before she storms off again, leaving us to stare in wonder at her back. I hope the table she like tipped her well, because for the first time in my 30 some years, I left no tip. As I said, as former server who understands tips are part of your way below minimum wage, that says a lot. I am a 20%+ tipper for good service, and the type that writes notes as well as compensating for great service. SO thanks for breaking me in to a new experience. Just a few other points. I was neither staring longingly at, or grumping angrily with my companion. These are both reasons to ignore a table, if you think they need alone time We were chatting and laughing, while keeping an open line of visual communication. In other words, the easiest tables, EVER. There was some paper on the floor from a guest. Owner had the buser clean up as soon as he saw, and busser promptly and cheerfully jumped to. Nice, but then the busers here always are on top of their game, to keep it cleaned and get your stuff out of the way. My pancakes were FULL of blueberries, and covered in strawberries Tougher than usual, but the first time I ever saw food wait that long in the window. Yum, thank you. We will be back as always. Just if our server is there, I may have to request another section.

Always excellent soups, incredible breakfasts (perfect hangover food), nice owner, reasonable prices, consistent quality, and always very clean! One thing that is nice is they don't have a bunch of crap hanging all over the walls that get dusty like so many restaurants do! It's a really clean place like most restaurants should be! I hope they survive for many years to come since many of these small establishments are obsolete due to the crappy big chains and/or a poor economy. Not sure how they could be compared to IHOP since there is no comparison. I have never had a bad meal @ Georges and the owner takes great pride in serving quality food! ***** Five Stars!

I am always looking for a breakfast place in Oak Park that makes a good Skillet. I gave George's another try (a few years back it was blah to me) and was surprise to find the Mexican Skillet on the menu and decided to give it a go. The Skillet was good with buttermilk pancakes on the side, chorizo meat with hash potatoes and fried eggs on top. Yum! George's is a nice, no-frills diner with good service in Oak Park.

Meh, indeed. A group of us went here on Sunday for lunch. We have some picky eaters in the group, and the expansiveness of George's menu was certainly a selling point. It was busy to be expected, and the restaurant did a great job of accommodating us (7 people - put in 2 booths next to each other instead of making us wait longer); but after that, well, it just wasn't very good. Now, I can't vouch for the table of three, but I will explain the experience with the 4 remaining members of the party. When one of the members at the table started to explain the situation with the two tables (as he was kindly treating us all to lunch), the server cut him off and replied, "I've already been told all about it." Granted, I know she was busy; the restaurant was packed. The tone was defensive and off-putting. To add to the problems with service, we were served two small waters, two large, and we were only asked if we wanted coffee, which none of us wanted - no juice, no soda, no ice tea, just coffee. Then, our waters were not filled again until our food was served, which took a long time - probably 25-30 minutes minimum. At that time, the server replaced our short glasses with equally-sized water glasses, demonstrating that the size difference in glasses was not typical. Essentially, it was just hurried and apathetic service, which is just disappointing. Ok, now onto the food. Some of the items ordered looked pretty delicious - the short stack of pancakes, the washington omelet with the apples, and the waffles with apples on top all looked - and according to those who enjoyed the dishes, tasted - good. The boyfriend ordered crepes with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and bananas on top. He received his food a good 5 minutes after everyone else with only blueberries and bananas. The server told him that they ran out of strawberries, so they overcompensated on the blueberries and bananas. He would have preferred they tell him no strawberries remained b/c he would have ordered something else, but such a disclosure wasn't made until everyone else was eating and he was near the point of gnawing on my arm for necessary sustenance. As for my meal, I ordered a salad with a side of creamy garlic dressing. According to the menu, the meal came with a bread basket and soup, which was creamy chicken and rice. The soup came immediately and tasted (and looked, I might add for anyone who can immediately recognized the distinct color of a can of condensed cream of chicken) like Campbell's. I would have rather just had my basket of rolls, my rolls that seemed to be MIA might I add. I had to ask for my rolls, to which the server replied, "Oh, you want some bread," as if I was asking for something extra. That is a great pet peeve of mine; yes, yes I would like something that was purported to accompany my meal, thanks. In any case, the salad was good (the name escapes me, but it had turkey, bacon, mixed greens including spinach), but I couldn't get past the fact that the dressing tasted like miracle whip with chunks of garlic stirred in. In any case, the overall consensus was that the food was decent, but nothing special, and because the service and overall experience was as disappointing as it was, the boyfriends parents have insisted that we find a different place to dine on the next visit. I'm glad I tried you, George's, but I'm afraid I won't be coming back.

I really love good diner/family restaurant/pancake house food. This is not it. Even factoring in that it's a big-menu locally-owned diner, the food just isn't that good. Bland, amateurish, shoddy quality. Would probably not return if you bought it for me.

  • Andrea B.

I had heard a lot of good things about this place so decided to go to breakfast with the boyfriend. We both ordered the blueberry pancakes. They were very bland and had barely any blueberries! I can honestly say my mom makes better pancakes, I even make better pancakes! I was upset that we had to pay for them since they were so bland-the most upsetting part was the lack of blueberries because thats obviously supposed to be the best part. I put a lot of the whipped butter on mine to give it flavor. Also, the cups were really dirty-were not washed well & the place was just overall very cheesy. I've had way better at I-HOP!

Most weekend mornings, this is where we'll be (if we aren't at Wishbone). Bottom Line: Good breakfast, good price, nice service. You can't go wrong. It's your typical breakfast diner. You can find just about any breakfast item on the menu. Take note that the Belgian Waffle here is particularly good. The seem to have a special talent for finding the right balance between crispy outside and soft inside that you just don't find anywhere else. The bacon here is not very good. It's just flavorless--tastes like they may use low-sodium bacon. So, when given the choice, choose sausage because if you are a bacon-person, you will be disappointed.

Walked in this place on a Saturday morning with my girlfriend. We were welcomed by the host handing us menus and pointing to a table across the room. Food is average, service is horrible. We decided to give it a second chance and were given the wrong change when we paid our bill.

If you like Diner food, it's good. If you're like me and don't, then don't get suckered into going here. It's basically a local version of IHOP with a poorly designed menu. Why have 100 mediocre items, instead of 7 good ones?

Good food, friendly service. Sometimes there's a wait for a table. Parking is a hassle but worth it. Perfect for brunch, whether with friends, family, or a hangover. The food isn't bad but it's not high grade cuisine, either. What sets this place apart from the rest is the way George and the staff greet you and treat you like an old friend.

A friend and I were searching for a good diner breakfast on a Sunday morning and ventured all over Oak Park until we found George's. We were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by George himself (we knew because several guests called to him by name). We found all staff to to be quite pleasant and friendly. Service was very good as was the food. This is be our regular breakfast place going forward in Oak Park.

A good amount of time spent on a Saturday afternoon,to find the perfect brunch spot, and after failing to find a good & cute spot in the deserted Oak Park,we Woman'ed up and stepped into this place. Well,well,well...an old looking diner ,filled with elderly people screaming their lungs out,one of them REALLY wanted some pie.Agh!! we ordered a customized egg white omelete, chicken fried rice and some sunny side eggs with potatoes served with a side of pancakes.A lot of food and the service was pretty quick. The place obviously had cute old people serving us with a gentle smile. The food was fantastic!! Great consistency, taste, and texture .When a place generally serves rice, breakfast and every other cuisine,it has always turned out to be a disappointment,But Mr.George here,is fantastic.Everything tasted great and it was a fair price. Good food, kind hosts, and a homely ambiance in a deserted park-Not bad at all!!!Mr.George i am not quiet sure if i would travel to the suburbs again, but i am letting the world know, that you are a hidden treasure :) -Smriti

Our family has been eating at George's for over a decade. We love their homemade soups, skillets and spanikopita. Service is always friendly and fast. It's a great place to take kids and groups and we never feel rushed. If you're looking for a classic diner, this is it.

Georges is the first place I ever ate in Oak Park and it's been a staple ever since. The reason is that their breakfasts are immediately satisfying in the way only 'comfort food' can be, they're served hot and very quickly, and the people that work there are genuinely pleased to have you eating there. The owner George is usually there in the mornings and then his son Johny takes over afternoons, evenings, and Sundays. The waitresses are all very nice and know how to get your order correct. Their breakfast sandwiches are awesome, especially if you get them on a croissant (try the BLT breakfast sandwich, it's awesome). Their lunch fare is bit less choice, but happily they serve breakfast all day (which makes my wife VERY happy since that's her favorite meal!) so this is a great place for a omelet dinner if that's what you're in the mood for. This is a classic neighborhood Greek/American place with a humble atmosphere, very quality waitstaff, and an owner that makes you feel welcome. Compared with the Corner Cafe and Maple Tree restaurant (the other options in Oak Park) Georges is the hands down winner. Go for the breakfast food, fast service, and reasonable prices.

Love, love, LOVE George's! As do any and all of my friends and family who visit. George's is a MUST! Go for breakfast, stay for lunch! The breakfast portions are very generous and always good - we're particularly fond of the skillets but have to share because one person can't possibly eat a whole one alone. Have run the range of breakfast items, all are great. Homemade soups are amazing, as are the sandwiches and burgers. The very brave can attempt the bacon and cheese wrapped hot dog - eek! Service is efficient and courteous, and meals are served up with a speed I've never seen before. A must-see for anyone in the area, and a tradition for my family.

We go often since it's about the only place everyone can get what they want. Great pancakes, crepes, sandwiches, salads, omelets. We don't usually order the dinner entrees but there's usually a list of specials. I avoid the soup - but I'm not a big soup person anyway. Crunchy pickles. Good slaw. George seems gruff but he's friendly once you become a regular.

This place is good for a few things. - A good meeting place. - Decent soup - Breakfast is probably the best thing George's has to offer. Overall I think this place is pretty overrated but I understand it's sort of a local place.

Breakfast served all day. Hash Browns are more of a scallop cut instead of julienne but still crispy and delicious. Crepes are more like a thin pancake and satisfying in their own right. Pancakes are very good. Overheard a woman at the next table saying that she's had pancakes in several other places but none are as good as George's. I'd skip the Corned beef hash next time. It's is similar to canned (ground meat with small diced potatoes) and usually prefer it chunky style or with sliced sandwich meat. Eggs were poached perfectly every time so their benedicts may be next on the list to try. Satisfying portions, quick and friendly service. The atmosphere was loud even when there were only 6 tables occupied.

The first thing to know about George's is that George will almost always be there when you walk in. I cannot remember one time out of the hundreds of visits that George has not been there. He may not be the king of pleasantries but he will always make you feel welcome. I've been going here since before I can remember and have eaten almost everything on the menu from the cold weather specials in July to the turkey dinner in March. The specials menu doesn't always match the season but it always hits the spot with me. You can order pretty much anything you could imagine and George has it somewhere back in the kitchen.

It's difficult to give George's 2 stars: I would give 3 stars for breakfast, 2 for lunch, and 1 (or 0) for dinner. It really is a decent breakfast place, although the coffee is often not fresh. But the food is excellent. However, my husband and I had one of the worst dinners we have ever experienced in our lives here - just horrible, horrible food in the evening. Stick to breakfast and you are OK.

If we're up early enough for breakfast.. this is where we go. The service is always excellent. A younger gal with a very strong Chicago accent usually waits on us. She is quick to bring you coffee, quick to get your food to you, and even quicker to make sure your coffee cup isn't empty. I really like the large amount of menu selections. When I go here I always have breakfast dilemma - sweet or savory? The crunchy french toast is YUM. The spinach and feta cheese omlet in also a winner. The skillets are a great option for brunch, or if you are really hungry. If you live in the OP/RF area.. definitely come visit George and have a bite to eat. (I believe he is the older, Greek (?), gentleman who can typically be seen sitting at the counter and taking your payment.)

i feel so lame. we've lived in oak park for just a little over 7 months now and we only just realized that george's was there a week or two ago. being the huge fans of breakfast that we are we had to hurriedly remedy that. we loved it. it totally lived up to our expectations of great dinner food (i don't know why other reviews came here for salads... idiots). My pancakes were spot on, the hashbrowns were killer and the coffee was decent. what more could i want? we'll definitely be back
